
SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 30

Helmick, Fanning, Dittmar, Sharpe, Ross, Ball, Love, Dawson,
Hunter, Mitchell, McCabe, Redd, Boley, Minear, Plymale, Craigo,
Chafin and Tomblin, Mr. President)
Designating every third Friday in September as "Legislators Back-
to-School Day"
Whereas, According to the National Assessment of Educational
Progress, recent national testing has revealed that students from
fourth through twelfth grades fell below the proficient level in
civics; and
Whereas, Young people, including students, tend to be
alienated from politics which results in fewer young people running
for public office; and
Whereas, To encourage and promote interest and participation
by young persons at some level in the political process, the
Legislature encourages its members to visit the public schools of
this state on the third Friday of every September in order to
inform and educate children about the political process; therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate:
That the Senate hereby designates the third Friday of every
September as "Legislators Back-to-School Day" and hereby encourages
the members and future members of the Legislature to visit the
public schools of this state on that day to inform and educate
students about the political process; and, be it
Further Resolved, That the Clerk is hereby directed to forward
a copy of this resolution to each member of this state's
congressional delegation, the Governor, the Superintendent of
Schools and to each county board of education.
